Does Libra Bring Balance? The Scales, the Market, and a Retrograde Twist

October 4, 2025

Every sign in the zodiac has a personality, but Libra's is unusually specific and unusually testable. Libra is the scales — balance, equilibrium, weighing both sides, struggling to commit. That's not a vague vibe; that's a description you could almost graph.

So I graphed it. If Libra season really carried a signature of balance, I'd expect the Nasdaq to sit near its normal range (not wild, not dead) and to chop — trade both sides without committing to a direction. Range-bound, two-sided, indecisive. Very... Libra.

Here's what the Sun in Libra actually looked like, against a baseline day of 264 points ($528):

Sample Median range vs. baseline Up Down Chop
Sun in Libra 152 days 255.5 / $511 −3% 22% 16% 61%

Read that like a Libra would want you to: it's balanced. The range sits 3% below normal — essentially average, neither expansion nor compression. The chop rate is high at 61% — the market churns two-sided instead of trending. And the up/down split is fairly even. That's about as "equilibrium" as a month gets. The scales, holding level.

I did not expect the symbolism to land this cleanly. It's still correlation, not destiny — but the shoe fit.

Then Mercury went retrograde in the scales

Here's where it got fun. Mercury retrograde is the folklore of miscommunication and indecision. Libra is already the sign of not-being-able-to-decide. So what happens when the trickster goes retrograde in the scales themselves?

Sample Range vs. base Up Down Chop
Sun in Libra, Mercury direct 124 254.1 / $508 −4% 24% 17% 58%
Sun in Libra, Mercury retrograde 28 268.8 / $538 +2% 14% 14% 71%

Look at the retrograde row. The chop rate jumps to 71% — the highest I've seen in a slice like this — and the direction split flattens to a perfectly indecisive 14% up / 14% down. The scales don't just hold; they wobble. Maximum churn, minimum conviction. If Libra is indecision, retrograde-in-Libra is indecision squared.

The market didn't get more violent during these stretches — the range barely moved. It got more wishy-washy. Which, honestly, is the most on-brand possible way for "Mercury retrograde in Libra" to show up.

The honest limits (because balance cuts both ways)

I'd be a hypocrite to write about balance and not weigh the other side of the scale:

So I file "Libra brings balance" as a genuine, watchable tendency, and "retrograde-in-Libra squares the indecision" as a charming, unconfirmed lead I'll keep collecting.

Why this one's my favorite kind of study

The moon was noise. Mercury retrograde on its own was noise. But Libra — the one sign whose symbolism makes a specific, checkable prediction about balance — actually showed a balanced, range-bound signature. Not because the stars command the market, but because the question was precise enough to test, and the data got to answer honestly.

That's the whole game. Ask the mystical a precise question, then let the numbers rule. Sometimes they say myth. This time the scales stayed level.

Sharpen your edge by telling yourself the truth — even when the truth, for once, agrees with the horoscope.

How this was done: ~1,800 daily MNQ bars from the 2019 launch, tagged by the Sun's zodiac sign and Mercury's retrograde state (both from computed astronomical positions), compared by median range and day-type against the all-days baseline. Retrograde-in-Libra sample spans three occurrences (2020–2022).
